Constituent Ordering as Alignment

چکیده

In Optimality Theory (OT), recent work has been exploring the idea that the order of constituents in syntax is determined by alignment constraints, developed within the theory of Generalized Alignment (see McCarthy and Prince (1993)). Costa (1998) and Samek-Lodovici (1998) present general overviews, and both have specifically argued that OT analyses are superior to proposals expressed in terms of the parameterized “directionality” of movement or ordering. In Korean, the ordering options for major clausal constituents have been explored in Choi (1999) and Lee (1999), who discussed the ordering of a verb’s arguments as an interaction between constraints on canonical ordering (e.g., basic SOV) and constraints on information structure (e.g., topic-prominent informational phrases are initial). In this paper, I will discuss extending the ideas of ordering as alignment into the core clausal syntax, concentrating on the non-phrasal clausal elements.

Do Heavy-NP Shift Phenomenon and Constituent Ordering in English Cause Sentence Processing Difficulty for EFL Learners?

Heavy-NP shift occurs when speakers prefer placing lengthy or “heavy” noun phrase direct objects in the clause-final position within a sentence rather than in the post-verbal position. Two experiments were conducted in this study, and their results suggested that having a long noun phrase affected the ordering of constituents (the noun phrase and prepositional phrase) by advanced Iranian EFL le...

Incorporating Constituent Structure Constraint into Discriminative Word Alignment

We introduce an approach to incorporate the constituent structure constraint into a discriminative word alignment model by presenting the constituent constraint in an explicit way and using three operations to ensure the constraint when search the best word alignment. In this way, we will be able to make use of the weak order constraint induced by the inversion transduction grammars (ITG), as w...

Linked topological colloids in a nematic host.

Geometric shape and topology of constituent particles can alter many colloidal properties such as Brownian motion, self-assembly, and phase behavior. Thus far, only single-component building blocks of colloids with connected surfaces have been studied, although topological colloids, with constituent particles shaped as freestanding knots and handlebodies of different genus, have been recently i...

Prenominal Modifier Ordering via Multiple Sequence Alignment

Producing a fluent ordering for a set of prenominal modifiers in a noun phrase (NP) is a problematic task for natural language generation and machine translation systems. We present a novel approach to this issue, adapting multiple sequence alignment techniques used in computational biology to the alignment of modifiers. We describe two training techniques to create such alignments based on raw...

Optimal Constituent Alignment with Edge Covers for Semantic Projection

Given a parallel corpus, semantic projection attempts to transfer semantic role annotations from one language to another, typically by exploiting word alignments. In this paper, we present an improved method for obtaining constituent alignments between parallel sentences to guide the role projection task. Our extensions are twofold: (a) we model constituent alignment as minimum weight edge cove...
